“A Good Sign” – Guideposts Magazine

What Prayer Can Do
I had a lot on my mind that sweltering summer day I set out on the 100-mile drive to Minneapolis, where my wife, Caryl, was undergoing treatments after a mastectomy. How would she respond? I worried. Would she beat breast cancer?
Halfway there the air conditioner in my car conked out. Is this a bad sign?
There was a garden center down the road. Might as well get out of the heat for a few minutes, I thought. Maybe I could pick up a plant for Caryl’s room.
I walked into the store and immediately spotted a foot-high lemon tree. It was in full bloom and already had one tiny lemon, about half an inch long, hanging from its branches.
The saying “Make lemonade from lemons” popped into my mind. I sat on a bench next to the tree, letting the cool air wash over me. Please, God, I prayed, make good come from Caryl’s illness.
I returned to my car carrying the little lemon tree.
Caryl loved it. “It’s beautiful,” she said. “Thank you.”
Over the next several months, Caryl battled through chemotherapy—seven difficult treatments—and we watched that lone lemon grow, first to the size of a ping-pong ball then even bigger. The day the lemon reached full size we got wonderful news. Caryl was cancer-free!
By April, the time of Passover, the lemon was ripe. “Want to harvest it for our Seder meal tonight?” I asked my wife.
She nodded. “I would like that very much.”
So I plucked the bright yellow fruit from the tree and gave it to Caryl. She squeezed out the juice, mixing it with water and a little sugar. At our Seder celebration that night, we drank the lemonade together in a toast to our future good health.
Like the more traditional Passover foods on the table—horseradish to symbolize the bitterness of slavery, parsley to represent new life—the lemonade reminded us that no matter how hard our struggles may seem, God always gives us hope that better things are to come.
They have: Thirteen years later Caryl remains strong and healthy. And that’s the very best sign.
“One Life to Love” – 33 Miles (with lyrics)
by Donny on Apr.28, 2009, under devotionals, devotions, music, videos
He never thought he cared so much about the minute hand,
Until he started playing for a second chance,
If he could only do it all again,
He’d trade the long nights that he spent behind his desk,
For all he missed,
He tells his wife,
I wish that this moment in this room, was not me dying,
But just spending a little time with you
You only get just one time around,
You only get one shot at this,
One chance,
To find out,
The one thing that you don’t wanna miss,
One day when its all said and done
I hope you see that it was enough,
This one ride,
One try,
One life,
To love.
She never thought she cared so much about those little hands,
That held on tight the day she left,
Til she was scared to death,
Sitting all alone on a hotel bed,
The end of the road,
The sun has set on her big plans,
To feel young again,
She picks up the phone,
Dials the number,
Hears that little voice,
That’s haunted every single mile,
Since she made that choice,
You only get just one time around,
You only get one shot at this,
One chance,
To find out,
The one thing that you don’t wanna miss,
One day when its all said and done
I hope you see that it was enough,
This one ride,
One try,
One life,
To love.
You only get just one time around,
You only get one shot at this,
One chance,
To find out the one thing
That you don’t wanna miss,
One day when its all said and done
I hope you see that it was enough,
This one ride,
One try,
One life,
One ride,
One try,
One life,
To love,
To love,
The Lord teaches the disciples about prayer through His own example:

INSIGHT
We often gain by our losses. The one who has suffered no loss is still a shallow person. It was expedient for the disciples that the Lord should leave because the Spirit’s presence was contingent upon His physical absence. Christ’s work must be complete so the Spirit can apply it to the hearts of men. Jesus must die and be resurrected. The Holy Spirit will draw men to His offer of salvation. And the best news? We’ll see Jesus again.
PRAYER
· God forgives our sin and beckons us to Himself for which we offer Him our gratitude and praise:
“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. . . .
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands .”
(Psalm 90:1-2, 17)
· Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin:
“Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight-
That You may be found just when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.”
(Psalm 51:4)
· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Now pause to pray this affirmation to the Lord:
“You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.”
(Isaiah 26:3)
· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· the homeless in America,
· greater wisdom for living life,
· the needs of your immediate family,
· your activities for the day,
· whatever else is on your heart.
· Offer this closing prayer to the Lord:
“May the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:10-11)

“The Slippery Slope” – Homily Grits Ministries
by Donny on Apr.26, 2009, under devotionals, devotions
Read 2 Peter 3:10-17, Psalm 101
“People with integrity have firm footing,
but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.”
Proverbs 10:9 NLT
|
There is a slippery slope to sin. The fall is often painful and the consequences severe.
When we fall into deception and deceit, we lose all credibility, and no one will believe us or trust us when our lies come to light. When we fall into gossip and backbiting, we often cause irreparable harm to relationships and reputations. When we fall into self promotion and self praise, we set ourselves up for the fall that inevitably follows pride. The sins of jealousy, envy, anger, and lust also have a downside that lead to consequences of strife, guilt, and shame. David’s slip into lust led to murder and the consequences of a still born child, rebellious children, and the anguish of shame and guilt that only God could forgive. When we slip into the sin of unforgiveness, we risk falling into the ranks of the unforgiven, because Scripture makes it very clear that we cannot receive forgiveness without forgiving. When we slip into the sin of unbelief, we fall into the downward spiral of despair that awaits all who refuse to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. The character of God has been modeled by the character of Jesus, who came to earth to show us how to live out the great commandment and great commission. When we live lives of integrity built on this firm foundation, we will enter into the joy of the Lord not only in this life but in the eternal life to come. We may sometimes slip, but we will never fall into the valley of the doomed. “Father, by the power of Your Spirit, help me to walk with the firm footing of a right relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” |
