No matter how hard I tried,

I struggled to feel God’s presence in my life…

By Suzanne S. Pluhar, Frankfort, Indiana

My practical nature served me well in running my own business, but when it came to my faith it was an impediment. I went to church every week. I read the Bible. I believed in God. Yet somehow I just didn’t feel him in my life. Certainly not the way my husband, Ed, and others I knew did. They didn’t need any tangible proof to trust God was always with them.

For a long time I struggled to find that same assurance. But it never seemed to come, no matter how I worked at it. Maybe I’m not meant to believe the way God wants us to, I thought dispiritedly. I used to enjoy the quiet Sunday-morning fellowship at church. Now going to services began to make me uncomfortable. Worshiping among people of “true” faith, I felt a little like I didn’t belong.

I confided my doubts to my husband. Even his encouragement didn’t soothe me. Lord, I know you’re there, I kept praying, but I just don’t feel your presence like I should.

At church one Sunday the pastor spoke about Thomas, the doubting apostle. I paid particular attention because I could identify with Thomas. He too needed tangible proof of Christ’s presence. What would it take for me?

Halfway through the sermon I felt a firm, comforting hand on my shoulder. I looked at my husband, grateful for his understanding. Then I saw his hands folded in his lap. I turned to the man on my right. He was holding a hymnal.

Puzzled, I glanced at the people in the pew behind me. They were all sitting back; not one of them was touching me. But the gentle pressure remained on my shoulder. Warmth enveloped my entire body and I felt strangely reassured.

Then I heard the pastor reciting words from the Book of John: “Do not doubt but believe.” Suddenly I knew whose hand was on my shoulder.

“Where’s Your Hope?” – Homily Grits

by Donny on Oct.22, 2009, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, music, prayers, videos

“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.”

Psalm 33:18

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40:30-32

There seems to be a lot of wishing going on without much hoping. We wish or desire for what we perceive are good things for ourselves and others but somehow seem to become very doubtful about our wishes coming true. We can not only hope but, like Job, know that “our redeemer lives and that He will again stand upon the earth.” (Job 19:25 NIV)

“I wish I could lose ten pounds.” “I wish I could get a new car,” “I wish I would win the lottery,” are just a few of the desires expressed that are common to many people.

There is often a large gap between our wish and our hope with regard to salvation. When asked about being sure of going to heaven, even many professing believers become hesitant and unsure. “I think I am,” “I hope that I am,” and often “how can anyone be sure of this.” We must understand the facts: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:12-14)

It is so good to know that our hope is a living hope based on the incredible power of God, where it becomes not only a desire but an expectation and confirmed fact of faith.

When our hope is confirmed by faith and trust in the incredible promises of God, we are no longer tossed about by conflict and doubt, but stand strong in the security of God’s love and the blessed assurance of the hope we have in Him.

Father, give me that hope that cannot disappoint in a God who cannot fail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“What ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Taught Me About Life ” by Dena Ross

by Donny on Oct.13, 2009, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

(Dena Ross is the Entertainment Editor at Beliefnet)

It’s hard to believe, but “The Wizard of Oz,” one of the most beloved movies of all time, celebrates its 70th birthday this year. Not only has the classic story of Dorothy and her funny friends entertained generations of moviegoers, it has also taught us some unforgettable lessons about life.

Here are 10 of the life lessons you can learn from “The Wizard of Oz.”

  • A true friend will help you on your life’s journey and get you through all the problems—big and small—that may arise. So accept your friends, quirks and all, and recognize when they need a little help too. Because you never know when you’ll need them around to rescue you from some flying monkeys.
  • Although Glinda the Good Witch directs Dorothy to the yellow brick road, explaining that it will lead her to the one person who can get her back home to Kansas, let’s face it: Dorothy probably could have found the road on her own. It was right there in front of her. Discover your own path in life—what you want to be, where you want to go, how you want to live–and be sure to sing and skip throughout the journey.
  • One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when we discover the Wizard is just a man. He has no magical powers. He doesn’t even have a booming voice. The lesson? Don’t try to be something you’re not, because the people who matter in this life will love you no matter what.
  • Although it should go without saying, home means more than just your house or apartment. It’s wherever the people you love—and who love you—are found. You can have many different “homes,” and even if you haven’t visited in a while, you can always go back.
  • We all remember the scene where Dorothy misses her balloon flight home, starts to cry, and is subsequently notified by Glinda that with those fancy ruby slippers, she had the power to return home the whole time; she just needed to discover it for herself. When in doubt, look within for the answer. You’re more powerful than you think.
  • Whether you want a better home, a more exciting job, or a new love, allow yourself to take a moment from your busy life to look over the rainbow and visualize future possibilities. This could really inspire you to start turning the dream into reality.
  • Sure, that mean Miss Gultch threatened to take Toto away after he snapped at her. But if Dorothy had not run away, she probably wouldn’t have gotten caught up in that tornado mess. Confronting your problems and figuring out a solution (with a little help from your friends or family) will help you feel better about yourself and allow you to sleep at night. You won’t even need a poppy field.
  • Dorothy knew giving her ruby slippers to the Wicked Witch would only lead to trouble. (The sparks that flew when the Witch tried to take them from her might have been an indication.) So when someone tries to make you do something you know in your heart isn’t right, stand firm and stay true to yourself.
  • Wonder what would have happened had Dorothy chosen to follow the Wicked Witch instead of Glinda? Probably nothing good. Dorothy chose to follow the Good Witch and was helped along her journey. Being positive and believing in good will make it easier for good things to happen in your life.
  • The answer to Dorothy’s problem getting home was literally under her nose the entire time–on her feet to be precise. When you’ve racked your brain for a fix to your own problem (big or small) and still don’t have a solution, try stepping away from it for a minute to clear your mind. Tackling your troubles with a clear head may help you find the simple answers that are right in front of you.

“Speaking Through Odd Circumstances” – Dr. Charles Stanley (In Touch Ministries)

by Donny on Oct.08, 2009, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

READ | Exodus 3:1-22

Can you remember a time when you were so engrossed in the details of your own life that you couldn’t hear God at all? In times like those, we oftentimes cannot detect the Lord’s whisper. So instead, He may shout through unusual circumstances.

Consider Moses in the third chapter of Exodus. Though well educated and raised as a prince, he was now exiled and humiliated in the wilderness. Life certainly wasn’t turning out as he’d envisioned, and he was no doubt preoccupied with fear, disappointment, and pride.

But God had big plans for Moses and needed to get his attention. So the Lord arranged something that the shepherd just couldn’t ignore: a bush that was on fire and yet was not being consumed. Even more startling, God spoke to Moses through the burning bush! Do you think that would have made you take notice?

Sometimes, this is exactly how God works. In order to speak to us, He must first get our undivided attention by doing something so unusual that we have no choice but to stop, look, and listen.

There is no such thing as an accident for a child of God. Every single thing you see or hear is something that God allowed you to notice for a reason.

We must learn how to perceive God in every circumstance, from the wild and unexpected to the simple and mundane. Whether our situation seems unbelievably good or unbearably bad, we are wise to step back and ask the Lord to help us view the matter from His perspective.
