“Enduring or Enjoying?” – Jeff Schreve

by Donny on Aug.29, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

(devotional by Pastor Jeff Schreve from Christianity.com)

In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Psalm 16:11

When I was a kid, I remember times when I got sick. My mom would make me take medicine so I could get better. I hated taking medicine. It always tasted so terrible. I wasn’t able to swallow pills very well, so every pill had to be chewed up and swallowed, and every liquid had to be choked down amidst gags and minor dry heaves. I endured the medicine so that I could get well.

Did you know that is how some people view the Christian life? They view it as if it were akin to bad medicine that one must take in order to get well. It is definitely not something anyone really likes; it is just a necessary burden and chore. It is something you must endure, not something you could possibly enjoy. Hmmm.

MAN’S CHIEF END

Have you ever read the opening statement of The Westminster Shorter Catechism of 1648? Probably not. But it is really good as it states, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” Did you catch that? We were created to glorify God and enjoy God forever. And forever is supposed to start right now!

MAN’S BEST FRIEND

Jesus Christ is the best friend a person could possibly imagine. He loves us no matter what, and He refuses to ever stop. He never leaves us or deserts us in our time of need. He is there as we walk though every dark valley. He listens to us and counsels us in our troubles and trials. He is a God full of love, joy, peace and excitement – and He wants to fill your heart and life with all those wonderful things.

If you have been guilty of enduring religion instead of enjoying salvation, the time is now to change gears. The Lord Jesus Christ wants you to walk with Him. He wants to help you walk in His ways so that you can be blessed and be a blessing to others. The Christian life is not a penalty, it is a privilege! It is an unfathomable, totally undeserved privilege to live everyday in the presence and fellowship of the King of the universe. WOW!

Life is too short to miss out on the great joy that is available to you and me as we take the hand of Jesus and live life with Him. Will you do it?

PRAYER

“Lord Jesus, help me to walk in the light with You. Help me to see how much You love me and how much You want to empower me to rise above my difficult circumstances. Help me to see You as You really are, “a friend of sinners” and “a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Help me to jettison my burdensome religion (with its long list of rules and regulations) and start enjoying a wonderful salvation and relationship with the Savior. Thank You, Lord, that the chief end of man is to glorify You and enjoy You forever. I choose to start today! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Love,

sig

“Open the windows of your soul and let God’s Spirit in!” – by Scott Walker (Guideposts/OurPrayer.org)

“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. . . .”
John 3:8 (NAS)

My children have always kidded me about how quickly I can fall asleep. When I sit down in my easy chair to watch a football game, my sons take bets as to how soon I’ll be snoozing. But occasionally I’ll have a night when sleep will not come. Last night I turned out my desk lamp at midnight, let the dogs back into the house and was asleep before my head hit the pillow—for fifteen minutes. Then I was jolted awake, a thousand thoughts pouring through my mind: My quarterly tax payment will soon be due; I’m nudging up on a deadline; I’ve got a doctor’s appointment next week. . . .

I got up, put on my robe and wandered out into the front yard. It was a beautiful night, mild and pleasant, balanced between spring and summer. Standing beneath a canopy of water oaks, I gazed at the stars as a breeze rippled off the western prairie. Going back inside, I climbed to the second floor, opened the windows in the guest room and lay down on the bed. In the darkness, I listened to the gentle wind whisper under the eaves and watched the curtains billow in. Snuggling under covers, I felt the breeze ruffle my hair. There was a smell of sweet hay in the soft Texas night. Then sleep embraced me.

When sleep and rest will not come, I need to open the windows of my soul and let God’s Spirit blow in.

Father, I cannot command the wind to blow, but I can trust that in Your good time, Your presence will be felt in my life, bringing peace and rest. Amen.

“Our God of Comfort” – Dr. Charles Stanley (In Touch Ministries)

by Donny on May.29, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

God’s care for us extends to the details of our lives. He knows when His children hurt and longs to offer comfort (Isaiah 49:13).

The Lord’s compassion is personal, continuous, and always available. We receive His comfort through the Holy Spirit, who lives within us. There is no situation or time when He is inaccessible to the believer—we can be consoled and reassured at any time, day or night.

Consider how the compassion of God was demonstrated through Jesus’ life. He interacted even with the “untouchables”—people whose bodies were infected with a contagious disease (Luke 17:11-14). And no sickness of ours will prevent Him from caring for us.

Jesus had compassion on people with medical conditions (Matthew 14:14). He not only healed them physically but also gave an even greater comfort—new life through the forgiveness of sins. And while our infirmities may remain, the Lord lovingly strengthens us to persevere (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

And what about the messes we get into? Peter’s betrayal of Christ was met with forgiveness (John 21:15-17). Thomas’ doubts were answered by Jesus Himself (John 20:27). Our mistakes won’t stop Him from loving us. Even to His enemies, Jesus left the way open for repentance.

God’s comfort and care are adequate for anything we face, whether it’s declining health, insufficient finances, or family trouble. Then, once we’ve experienced His consolation, we are to become bearers of comfort to others (2 Corinthians 1:4). People everywhere are in great need of His compassion.

“God uses situations and difficulties to get our attention” – Dr. Charles Stanley (In Touch Ministries)

by Donny on May.06, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

James 4:6-10 (NCV)

6 But God gives us even more grace, as the Scripture says, “God is against the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)

7 So give yourselves completely to God. Stand against the devil, and the devil will run from you.89 Be sad, cry, and weep! Change your laughter into crying and your joy into sadness. 10 Humble yourself in the Lord’s presence, and he will honor you. Come near to God, and God will come near to you. You sinners, clean sin out of your lives. You who are trying to follow God and the world at the same time, make your thinking pure.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” That is an amazing promise! As we open ourselves up to the Lord, He opens up to us. If we come to Him in submission, repentance, and brokenness, He rushes in with forgiveness, love, and faithfulness. There is no room for self-sufficiency or self-protection in this interaction. Only in the humility of helplessness will we discover the sufficiency of His presence.

At first glance, we may seem to be the ones who begin this open relationship, but in reality, it is God who has taken the initiative; we are merely responding to His overture (John 6:44). Many times He uses situations and difficulties to get our attention and stimulate our thirst for Him. What appears to us to be a painful or desperate situation is His invitation to draw near.

Even our greatest failures and sins can lead us to Christ, as we seek forgiveness from the Father. With an attitude of humble repentance, we can enter into a more intimate relationship with God. However, if you and I continue living in rebellion and are unwilling to confess and repent, He will not open up and reveal more of Himself to us. Sin always blocks our ability to know the Lord.

Have you let adversity or failure pull you away from God instead of toward Him? To put distance between you and Jesus, Satan will misuse the very situations that the Lord can utilize to draw you to Himself. Don’t let the Enemy win the battle. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Open yourself to God’s peace; He will be faithful to comfort us!

by Donny on Mar.16, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

Psalm 25:17 (NIV)

The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish.

Maggie was beside herself with anxiety. The last thing her boss had said to her was that she had to be in the office early the next morning. Her boss and the owner of the company wanted to “have a talk with her about her performance.” What did that mean? Was it good or bad? Surely they would have told her, if it was good. Maggie just knew she was going to be fired.

Isn’t it amazing what we can let our minds do to us? We blow things out of proportion, and it causes such great suffering and distress. When we thrust ourselves into panic and fear, it is good to know that we can turn to the Lord, and He will be faithful to comfort us. Open yourself to His peace, and you will find new serenity.

Prayer: “I let my mind get carried away sometimes, Lord. Please don’t let me get too carried away. I need Your wisdom as an anchor when I set myself adrift in worry and fear. Be my salvation, Father. Amen.”
