“It Is Good to Give Thanks to God” – Dr. Charles Stanley (In Touch Ministries)

PSALM 92

1It is wonderful to be grateful and to sing your praises, LORD Most High!

2It is wonderful each morning to tell about your love and at night to announce how faithful you are.

3I enjoy praising your name to the music of harps, 4because everything you do makes me happy, and I sing joyful songs.

5You do great things, LORD. Your thoughts are too deep 6for an ignorant fool to know or understand.

7Though the wicked sprout and spread like grass, they will be pulled up by their roots.

8But you will rule over all of us forever, 9and your hateful enemies will be scattered and then destroyed.

10You have given me the strength of a wild ox, and you have chosen me to be your very own.

11My eyes have seen, and my ears have heard the doom and destruction of my terrible enemies.

12Good people will prosper like palm trees, and they will grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.

13They will take root in your house, LORD God, and they will do well.

14They will be like trees that stay healthy and fruitful, even when they are old.

15And they will say about you, “The LORD always does right! God is our mighty rock.”

Throughout the Psalms, we are reminded and even commanded to give thanks to the Lord. Thanksgiving Day should never become a substitute for the daily expression of gratitude to God for all that He has done.

Because our culture is largely characterized by ingratitude, we need to work at developing a grateful heart. Even in prayer, we can become self-centered and drift from one petition to another without a word of praise to God. Giving thanks refocuses our attention onto the Lord as we remember His love and faithfulness and praise Him for who He is and what He has done.

Thanksgiving refreshes our souls as we spend time with God, concentrating on His goodness and grace. Anxiety is replaced with peace, and despondency with joy. If you wake up each morning and thank the Lord for deliverance from the power of sin, provision for all your needs, and guidance for the day ahead, what is left to cause worry or discouragement?

Gratitude to God for His faithfulness in the past increases faith and strengthens trust in Him for the future. Remember how He carried you in times of pain, helped you in periods of weakness, and supplied all your needs. You can trust Him with whatever lies ahead.

To establish a habit of thanksgiving, recall God’s lovingkindness in the morning, and recount His faithfulness at night. Thank Him for blessings—and also for the deep work He is doing in you through difficulties. As you start to see situations from His perspective, your gratitude and trust will grow.

The Lord teaches the disciples about prayer through His own example:

John 16

INSIGHT

We often gain by our losses. The one who has suffered no loss is still a shallow person. It was expedient for the disciples that the Lord should leave because the Spirit’s presence was contingent upon His physical absence. Christ’s work must be complete so the Spirit can apply it to the hearts of men. Jesus must die and be resurrected. The Holy Spirit will draw men to His offer of salvation. And the best news? We’ll see Jesus again.

PRAYER

· God forgives our sin and beckons us to Himself for which we offer Him our gratitude and praise:

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. . . .
And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands .”

(Psalm 90:1-2, 17)

· Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin:

“Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight-
That You may be found just when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.”

(Psalm 51:4)

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Now pause to pray this affirmation to the Lord:

“You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.”

(Isaiah 26:3)

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

· the homeless in America,
· greater wisdom for living life,
· the needs of your immediate family,
· your activities for the day,
· whatever else is on your heart.

· Offer this closing prayer to the Lord:

“May the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:10-11)

“The Slippery Slope” – Homily Grits Ministries

by Donny on Apr.26, 2009, under devotionals, devotions

heisaliveRead 2 Peter 3:10-17, Psalm 101

“People with integrity have firm footing,

but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.”

Proverbs 10:9 NLT

There is a slippery slope to sin. The fall is often painful and the consequences severe.
When we fall into deception and deceit, we lose all credibility, and no one will believe us or trust us when our lies come to light.
When we fall into gossip and backbiting, we often cause irreparable harm to relationships and reputations.
When we fall into self promotion and self praise, we set ourselves up for the fall that inevitably follows pride. The sins of jealousy, envy, anger, and lust also have a downside that lead to consequences of strife, guilt, and shame.
David’s slip into lust led to murder and the consequences of a still born child, rebellious children, and the anguish of shame and guilt that only God could forgive.
When we slip into the sin of unforgiveness, we risk falling into the ranks of  the unforgiven, because Scripture makes it very clear that we cannot receive forgiveness without forgiving.

When we slip into the sin of unbelief, we fall into the downward spiral of despair that awaits all who refuse to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.
The character of God has been modeled by the character of Jesus, who came to earth to show us how to live out the great commandment and great commission.  When we live lives of integrity built on this firm foundation, we will enter into the joy of the Lord not only in this life but in the eternal life to come. We may sometimes slip, but we will never fall into the valley of the doomed.
“Father, by the power of Your Spirit, help me to walk with the firm footing of a right relationship with You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
We have a great cloud of witnesses!

“Take You Back” – Jeremy Camp (with lyrics)

The reason why I stand
The answer lies in you
You hung to make me strong
Though my praise was few
When I fall and bring your name down

But I have found in you
A heart that pleads forgiveness
Replacing all these thoughts
Of painful memories
But I know
That your response will always be

(Chorus)
I’ll take you back always
And even when your fight is over now
Even when your fight is over now
I’ll take you back always
And even when the pain is coming through
Even when the pain is coming through
I’ll take you back

You satisfy this cry
Of what I’m looking for
And I take all I can
And lay it down
Before the throne of endless grace, now
That radiates what’s true

I’m in the only place
That erases all these faults
That have overtaken me
But I know
That your response will always be

(Repeat Chorus)

I can only speak
With a grateful heart
As I’m pieced by this gift
Of your love

I will always bring an offering
I can never thank you enough

(Chorus Two)
You’ll take me back always
And even when my fight is over now
Even when my fight is over now
You’ll take me back always
And even when my pain is coming through
Even when my pain is coming through
You’ll take me back always

Even when my fight is over now
Even when my fight is over now

You’ll take me back always

Even when my pain is coming through
Even when my pain is coming through

You’ll take me back
