“Why do we suffer?” – Daily Disciples Ministries

by Donny on Aug.17, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

(devotional by Daily Disciples Ministries from Christianity.com)

Isaiah 53:10-11 (NIV)

10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

We struggle when we think that we will have to experience “trials of various kinds.” Various kinds of trials invariably come with suffering. It does not take much effort to see that there is so much suffering, but we wonder why do Christians have to experience it when Jesus came to give us life abundantly? We frequently forget that the abundant life starts here, amidst all the suffering. We all know that there are more ways to suffer than just physically. Mental, emotional and circumstantial events can all bring aspects of suffering. At any given time, we could be faced with a serious trial by any one of these means. Why would God allow that to happen?

The word Christian means “little Christ.” As Christians, we are not greater than our Master and His call on earth was to suffer. The NIV says that He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:3) Jesus was filled with all the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace) while suffering and in sorrow. That is the goal of the Christian’s life. Despite all the emotional, mental, physical, circumstantial torment, we have love, joy, peace, patience–through it all.

The rain falls on the just and unjust alike. It fall on the saved and the unsaved. We are not spared from trials because we are Christians. But it is through the everyday issues of life that we are changed into Christ-likeness because of them. Jesus is our example as well as our intercessor who knows and understands whatever we are facing. Turn to face Him, knowing that the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.

Our mission is to evangelize the lost and awaken the saved to live empowered lives by the Work of God and His Holy Spirit. Daily Disciples Ministries makes a difference for the kingdom of God by teaching and training believers how to be in God’s Word, how to pray and how to walk with Jesus every day, as His daily disciple. “El-emet” – Pastor Bob Coy (Active Word)

by Donny on Aug.04, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. Psalms 31:5 (NKJV)

When was the last time you put your trust in someone or something, only to be let down? Was it a product that was advertised as being the answer to all your problems…but when you got it home and put it to the test it was a total bust? Or perhaps it was a person who promised up one side and down the other to do something for you…but in your moment of need, he or she didn’t come through.

We all know what that’s like. At one time or another, we’ve all had that sinking realization that we were wrong to invest our confidence in that thing or that person. They were fake and phony. They let us down. We had an impression of them, an impression that wasn’t…emet.

What? Emet is the Hebrew word that represents the trueness of God, His certainty and dependability. It’s that component of His character that never leaves us with that sinking feeling the way products and people do. Emet points to the fact that God is always as good as advertised, always capable and faithful to come through in the clutch. It means He will always follow through on what He’s promised. Every single time. Without exception.

Many have become disillusioned or disappointed with life because they were promised one thing and got something else. In some cases, they were even let down by something or someone who was supposed to represent God. And the result is that they’ve written the whole “God thing” off as fake and phony.

If that’s you, it’s time to know God for who He truly is. It’s time to know Him as El-emet, the God of truth, who can be completely trusted with every aspect of your existence.

Think about it…

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?

A Prayer for God’s Guidance – Psalm 25

by Donny on May.17, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

Psalm 25:1-7 (NCV)

1 Lord, I give myself to you; 2 my God, I trust you. Do not let me be disgraced; do not let my enemies laugh at me. 3 No one who trusts you will be disgraced, but those who sin without excuse will be disgraced.

4 Lord, tell me your ways. Show me how to live. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, my God, my Savior. I trust you all day long.6 Lord, remember your mercy and love that you have shown since long ago. 7 Do not remember the sins and wrong things I did when I was young. But remember to love me always because you are good, Lord.

Enemies are those who not only oppose us, but also oppose God’s way of living. Enemies can also be temptations – money, success, prestige, lust. And our greatest enemy is Satan. David asked God to keep his enemies from overcoming him because they opposed what God stood for. If his enemies succeeded, David feared that many would think that living for God was futile. David knew that God would triumph, but he didn’t want his enemies’ success to be an obstacle to the faith of others.

David expressed his desire for guidance. How do we receive God’s guidance? The first step is to want to be guided and to realize that God’s guidance is found mainly in His Word, the Bible. Psalm 119 tells of the endless knowledge found in God’s Word. By reading it and constantly learning from it, we will gain the wisdom to perceive God’s direction for our lives (Hebrews 5:14).

God is unlimited, all-conquering, and has unrestrained authority over all of creation and over each individual. Therefore, He is the only source of salvation, hope, and true peace through the forgiveness of sins.

Psalm 25:8-11 (NCV)

8 The Lord is good and right; He points sinners to the right way. 9 He shows those who are humble how to do right, and He teaches them His ways.10 All the Lord’s ways are loving and true for those who follow the demands of His agreement.11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my many sins.

We are bombarded today with unlimited appeals to “go my way.” TV advertising alone places hundreds of options before us, in addition to appeals made by political parties, cults, false religions, and dozens of other groups. Numerous organizations including Christian organizations seek to motivate us to “support the cause.” Add to that the dozens of decisions we must make concerning our jobs, our families, our money, our society, and we become desperate for someone to show us the right way.

If you find yourself pulled in several directions, remember that the Lord “shows those who are humble how to do right, and He teaches them his ways.

Psalm 25:15-20 (NCV)

15 My eyes are always looking to the Lord for help. He will keep me from any traps. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me, because I am lonely and hurting. 17 My troubles have grown larger; free me from my problems. 18 Look at my suffering and troubles, and take away all my sins. 19 Look at how many enemies I have! See how much they hate me! 20 Protect me and save me. I trust you, so do not let me be disgraced.

Life’s problems always seem to go from bad to worse. God is the only one who can reverse this downward spiral. He can take our problems and turn them into glorious victories. There is one necessary requirement – we, like the psalmist (David), must cry out, “Come, Lord, and show me your mercy.” When you are willing to do that, the worst can become something wonderful. But the next step is yours, for God has already made His offer.

The Influence of True Friends – Psalm 1

by Donny on Apr.19, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

Psalm 1 (NCV)

1 Happy are those who don’t listen to the wicked, who don’t go where sinners go, who don’t do what evil people do.
2 They love the Lord’s teachings, and they think about those teachings day and night.
3 They are strong, like a tree planted by a river. The tree produces fruit in season, and its leaves don’t die. Everything they do will succeed.
4 But wicked people are not like that. They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
5 So the wicked will not escape God’s punishment. Sinners will not worship with God’s people.
6 This is because the Lord takes care of his people, but the wicked will be destroyed.

The writer began his psalm extolling the joys of being a godly person – one who obeys God and refuses to listen to those who discredit or ridicule Him. Our friends and associates can have profound influence on us, often in very subtle ways. If we insist on friendships with those who scoff at what God considers important, we may be drawn into sin and become indifferent to God’s will. This attitude is the same as scoffing. Do your friends build up your faith or do they tear it down? The influence of true friends should draw you closer to God.

The psalmist focused on the age-old question of joy & happiness. He tells us what to avoid (verse 1) – the company of scoffing sinners. In the next verse he tells us what not to avoid – the company of the God of all joy and His Word. The shadowy influence of scoffing sinners separates us from the radiance of God’s joyful presence, as a dark cloud separates us from the morning sun.

You can learn how to follow God by meditating on His laws. “Meditating” means spending time reading and thinking about God’s Word and how you should change so you are living as God wants. Knowing and meditating on God’s Word are the first steps towards applying it to your everyday life. If you want to follow God more closely, you must know what He says.

These “laws” on which we are to meditate include all of Scripture: the first five books of Moses, the prophets, and the other writings (the entire Bible). The more we know of the whole scope of God’s Word, the more resources we will have for our daily decisions.

When Scripture promises, “everything you do will succeed,” it does not mean immunity from failure or difficulties. Nor is it a guarantee of health, wealth, and happiness. What Scripture means by success is this: when God’s wisdom is applied to our lives, the fruit it bears in us will be good and receive God’s approval. As a tree soaks up water and bears fruit, we also are to soak up God’s Word, producing actions and attitudes that honor God. True prosperity is found by knowing the true value of God’s Word.

Although evil people may get the upper hand at times, God assures us that a day is coming when their sins will be punished (Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 6:16-17; Revelation 20:11-15).

“The Holy Spirit: Giver of Gifts” by Dr. Charles Stanley

by Donny on Feb.22, 2010, under Uncategorized, devotionals, devotions, prayers

Romans 12:1-13 (NCV)

1 So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship. 2 Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. 3 Because God has given me a special gift, I have something to say to everyone among you. Do not think you are better than you are. You must decide what you really are by the amount of faith God has given you.4 Each one of us has a body with many parts, and these parts all have different uses.5 In the same way, we are many, but in Christ we are all one body. Each one is a part of that body, and each part belongs to all the other parts.6 We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us. The person who has the gift of prophecy should use that gift in agreement with the faith.7 Anyone who has the gift of serving should serve. Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach.8 Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.9 Your love must be real. Hate what is evil, and hold on to what is good.10 Love each other like brothers and sisters. Give each other more honor than you want for yourselves.11 Do not be lazy but work hard, serving the Lord with all your heart.12 Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when trouble comes, and pray at all times.13 Share with God’s people who need help. Bring strangers in need into your homes.

Do you feel ill equipped to serve the Lord? A sense of inadequacy is one of the many excuses people use to avoid ministering for Him, but it is not a valid one. Failing to follow His call has three consequences: 1) we hinder God’s work on earth, 2) we miss a blessing for obedience, and 3) we lose out on rewards in heaven.

Jesus Christ knew all about the human tendency to feel inadequate. That is why He assured His followers they would receive a Helper—the Holy Spirit—who would come to abide in them forever. The Spirit enables, energizes, and equips believers to serve the Lord. One of the ways He aids us is by providing spiritual gifts, which are special capabilities given to believers.

Our heavenly Father has a ministry in mind for each of His followers. Therefore, necessary spiritual “equipment” has been selected to help us carry out His work. These gifts will complement and augment the natural talents our Creator built into us before birth. It is His purpose that we combine the two in order to serve Him with all of our heart. Even the smallest job contributes to the Great Commission and the strengthening of Jesus Christ’s body, the church.

The Lord has a plan for every believer. To ensure that we can meet the Lord’s expectations, He first builds natural talents into us. At salvation, He adds a spiritual gift. Then God opens doors of opportunity and the Holy Spirit manifests His power so that we can carry out the work set before us.
